Almere Votes

Almere Kiest is a three-part documentary about Almere in the run-up to the municipal elections of Wednesday 3 March.

Filmmaker Jacco Groen draws a portrait of Almere as its (local) political parties campaign — and at the same time shows ordinary residents looking for happiness in a city in the middle of an ambitious expansion.

The three 25-minute episodes follow figures including Frits Huis, lead candidate for Leefbaar Almere, and Shangram Karim, the young frontman of the Dutch Muslim Party. There are also impressions of Inge Swart, a singer-songwriter taking part in a talent contest at Café ’t Boemeltje, and photographer Fred Rotgans, who records events in Almere in all weathers. All eyes are on the PVV, which only appears at carefully chosen occasions.
